Harrogate is a great place to do a spot of fishing no matter what type, we have carp fishing in Harrogate, pike fishing in Harrogate and plenty of fly fishing in Harrogate all around the area.
With fly fishing in the River Nidd to carp fishing in a number of the ponds and lake around the local area and with a few of the best reservoir in Yorkshire we have it all covered.
Harrogate is situated between Ripon and Leeds in North Yorkshire, With the Yorkshire Dales only a stone throw away, with some of the best wild brown and rainbow trout in the country.
The River Nidd is the closest to Harrogate town centre, it is smaller than the river Wharfe and the river Ure but has good fly fishing for trout and grayling. The river is probably my favourite of all river in the area as it has good cover in many areas, don’t get me wrong there is parts that not as good but definitely worth a visit of its 30 miles stretch.
The River Wharfe is larger with it running over 60 miles starting high in the Yorkshire Dales, the Wharfe has a reputation for its large stock of wild brown trout and its grayling, the river is more open and probably a bit easier for casting with not as many trees around.
The River Ure stretches for 45 miles and is probably as good as it gets, it has great stock as well of grayling and good sized wild brown trout. The river improves significantly below the Aysgarth Falls area not to say that you can’t catch above that area, but In my opinion i would fish below, fishing around the late April to May and September to October times are your prime times to fish. In the early summer i would use dry fly for the grayling as they get up to the 2lb size, the best flies are the small flies such as the midge and small cdc flies for the grayling.
The closest Reservoirs to Harrogate are Fewston and Swinsty only 8 miles away in the Washburn Valley, both Reservoirs are over 100 acres and similar in character. Full of trout both brown and rainbow always hungry for a good buzzer there are many spots to go try any fly and technique, i have caught on all here from dry to lures but in my opinion with the water brown from the peat i would use lures with orange in the colour such as a Pheasant Tail Nymph or a orange Thorax.
Tickets are available, by either cash or card payment, from the fishing office located at Swinsty Moor car park. Discounts are available for children under the age of 16, pensioners and the disabled. Specialist disabled facilities are available. All hooks must be barbless/de-barbed.

Carp Fishing
Carp fishing is now probably the most common fishing around. There are many carp fishing lakes to suit the serious specimen angler, the match fishing angler and the person who just enjoys a bit of occasional fishing. Carp originally came from Asia, and were introduced into the UK in the 13th century. Since then they have naturalised and are now found in most waters in the UK. Carp grow up to 98lbs, which is the current record, but most are in the 5-20lb range.
Carp fishing is well suited to the family. Many lakes stock large quantities of fish in the 2-10lb range, so you won’t sit on the bank and fish all day without a bite. To buy some Carp tackle go to Fishtec online shop.
